ਪੰਜਾਬ ਰਾਜ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਉੱਤਰ-ਪੱਛਮ ਵੱਲ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਖੁਸ਼ਹਾਲ ਸੂਬਿਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਇਕ ਹੈ । ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੋ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੇਲ ਹੈ ‘ਪੰਜ+ਆਬ’ ਭਾਵ ‘ਪੰਜ ਪਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ’ । ਇਹ ਪੰਜ ਦਰਿਆ ਹਨ ਸਤੁਲਜ, ਬਿਆਸ, ਰਾਵੀ, ਚਿਨਾਬ ਅਤੇ ਜੇਹਲਮ । ਅਜੋਕੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਚ ਕੇਵਲ ਸਤੁਲਜ, ਰਾਵੀ ਅਤੇ ਬਿਆਸ ਹੀ ਵਗਦੇ ਹਨ । ਬਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਦਰਿਆ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਥਿਤ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਚ ਹਨ । ਪੰਜਾਬ ਰਾਜ ਤਿੰਨ ਇਲਾਕਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੰਡਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ : ਮਾਝਾ, ਦੋਆਬਾ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਲਵਾ । ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਆਰਥਿਕਤਾ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਅਧਾਰ ਹੈ । ਹੋਰ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਉਦਯੋਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਗਿਆਨਕ ਉਪਕਰਣਾਂ, ਬਿਜਲੀ ਦਾ ਸਮਾਨ, ਵਿੱਤੀ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ, ਮਸ਼ੀਨੀ ਔਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ, ਕੱਪੜਾ ਉਦਯੋਗ, ਸਿਲਾਈ ਮਸ਼ੀਨਾਂ ਆਦਿ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹਨ । ਸੁਤੰਤਰਤਾ ਉਪਰੰਤ 1947 ਵਿਚ ਪਿਛੜਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਵੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਨੇ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਣ ਆਰਥਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ । ਇਹ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਅਨਾਜ ਦੇ ਕੁਲ ਉਤਪਾਦਨ ਵਿਚ ਲਗਭਗ ਦੋ ਤਿਹਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਦੁੱਧ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਤਿਹਾਈ ਦਾ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਇਹ ਕਣਕ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਉਤਪਾਦਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਖੁਰਾਕ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਵਿਚ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਹਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਾਂਤੀ (ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਤ ਇਕ ਵੱਡਾ ਕਦਮ) ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਭਰਵਾਂ ਹੁੰਗਾਰਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ । ਭਾਵੇਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀ ਅਬਾਦੀ ਦਾ 2.5 ਪ੍ਰਤੀਸ਼ਤ ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਘੱਟ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਭਾਰਤ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਖੁਸ਼ਹਾਲ ਵਰਗ ਹਨ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ
